FORBES – The Ten Most Dangerous U.S. Cities for Women: http://www.forbes.com/sites/meghancasserly/2012/04/26/most-dangerous-us-cities-women-anchorage-fairbanks-flint/

GENDER BASED VIOLENCE: Violence against women and girls is one of the most disturbing aspects of living in a culture that promotes a hierarchy of power in human relationships according to class, race, and gender, among other divisions. In the United States, a woman is more likely to be assaulted, injured, raped, or murdered by a male partner than by any other type of attacker. According to the National Woman Abuse Prevention Project, approximately 3 to 4 million women are beaten each year and more than 1,000 women-an estimated 4 per day-are murdered by their husbands or partners…it is estimated that a woman is battered every 15 seconds…Sexual assault is considered to be the fastest growing yet least reported crime. According to statistics, a rape is committed every 6 minutes. …The phrase “a man’s home is his castle” sends a message that such violence is a private matter. http://www2.edc.org/WomensEquity/pubs/digests/digest-gbviolence.html

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S PLEAS TO MEN TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN – CHANGING A CULTURE OF RAPE: The president said a priority was to find ways to encourage more men to intervene when they see an attack or to report assaults. “I want every young man in America to feel some strong peer pressure in terms of how they are supposed to behave and treat women,” Mr. Obama said. “Men have to take more responsibility; men have to intervene,” he added. “The measure of manhood is willingness to speak up and speak out, and begin to change the culture.”

COLLEGE AGED WOMEN ARE THE HIGHEST RISK GROUP FOR DATE RAPE BY DRUGS OR ACOHOL: RAINN recommends (TO PRESIDENT OBAMA’S TASK FORCE) a three-tiered approach when it comes to preventing sexual violence on college campuses. A prevention campaign should include the following elements:
1. Bystander intervention education: empowering community members to act in response to acts of sexual violence.
2. Risk-reduction messaging: empowering members of the community to take steps to increase their personal safety.
3. General education to promote understanding of the law, particularly as it relates to the ability to consent. https://rainn.org/images/03-2014/WH-Task-Force-RAINN-Recommendations.pdf

What does all this mean? Well, one, if you’re female your have a one in four chance of being assaulted in your lifetime. But, if your are a college lady you also have a one in four chance of being raped, http://listen.nycagainstrape.org/learn.html, and it’s likely to be assisted by date rape drugs and alcohol. But rape and violence against women followed a fundamental shift in society from a matriarchal culture to a patriarchal society supported by a bible that designates woman the property of man lesser by alleged acts of Eve so, to say rape is a cultural phenomena diminishes the fact that violence against women is a global systemic fact of life. It will require a shift in consciousness for some men to eradicate predatorily instincts toward women and toward children. These are ancient issues acerbated by the prolific availability of drugs and alcohol available to men to subdue unsuspecting women and children. These predators are men. Only men perpetrate crimes and violence against women that spans the globe. The president clearly understands that raising the consciousness of men to act from their inherent goodness and align men in nobler roles towards women. It is but a small step for women but the journey begins with the first step. It’s a beginning. But it’s a systemic issue that must be eradicated at its root like slavery and other forms of prejudice and oppression. Talk about oppressive, look to other women throughout the third world and

other developing countries where violence against women is also engrained culturally as throughout the world. It is men who rape and prey on women.

It is a male issue in a world dominated by men. As women in America we can negotiate our rights through the legislative process and believe we are making gains. But, it seems we are negotiating what is ours as human beings regardless of gender. We have a right to be free from fear of our own friends, or favorite cousin, or uncle or father, or brother, or your dad’s business partner. They all might be a potential predator.

As women today in the present moment we must remain vigilant and always go out with a BFF and never leave drinks unattended, or take one from a stranger. And, above all we can strive to raise our sons to love and honor and respect women and all human beings and raise awareness of a woman’s right as a human being to live free from predatorily threats of random and premeditated acts of violence.
