Women's Awareness Blog

{June 3, 2016}   Katie Koestner

Bringing her story of date rape to the world, Katie Koestner (http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-36434191), kept her story alive. We know it can happen to any girl or woman. It can happen if your female. Thank you Katie Koestler for awareness you have provided by telling your story until people listened. Thank you. I know there are many of you out there that have a story too. Let us hear your voice. Join the conversation.

Please, help keep my daughter, Skylar’s story alive. Its a story about how a young 22 year old girl can innocently or unknowingly open doors and hearts to predators in their midst. I have written a novel, called Sophie’s Shadow. (previously written as SHADOWDANCE by Cat Lynn Boyle as of 2016 03 20by Cat Lynn Boyle as of 2016 03 20) It tells my daughter’s story. It’s about what happened to her one dawn when her boyfriend invited her after hours to his studio. Seven hours laters, she died in his arms after ingesting a drink laced with the date rape drug, GHB. Skylar’s case is a cold case, and, what her case needs is the attention Katie Koestler is able to incite around her experience with date rape. Katie Koestner is the hero, I’m not. If any of you reading this blog have ideas about how to build momentum around Skylar’s story, please reply with your ideas. And, Katie, if you read my blog, I’d really enjoy hearing more of your story. Thank you for following.

Weigh in,..

Do you think girls dress in a way that invites trouble? http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/06/opinion/costello-provocative-clothes-dont-cause-rape/?cid=ob_articlesidebarall&iref=obinsite

Imagine this scenario: A young man is talking with his father about sexual assault. How might that conversation go in a world where you believed girls could provoke boys into attacking them simply by being scantily dressed?
Son: “Dad, you were right. I couldn’t control myself. She looked so…sexy. I knew she wanted it.”

Father: “It’s okay, son. It’s evolution. Men have been tempted since caveman days. She should have covered up. How short was her skirt?”

I’m praying most fathers would never dream of raising a son this way.
I accept the fact that men are visual. Mike Matthews puts it like this in an article on catholiceducation.org “….The fact is, it doesn’t take much visual stimulus at all for guys to become sexually aroused. The sight of the female body, even just a little bit and even if it’s a complete stranger, can trigger sexual thoughts instantly. This might be difficult for women to understand, but it’s absolutely true…”   http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/06/opinion/costello-provocative-clothes-dont-cause-rape/?cid=ob_articlesidebarall&iref=obinsite

Linda Fairstein, who prosecuted sex crimes for 30 years in New York City says, “Sexual assault is the only crime in the book, literally, where the offender repeatedly blames the victim. I’ve … had men who attacked 5-year-old girls who’ve said, ‘she climbed on my lap and she was very sexy and I thought she was inviting me to touch her.'”  http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/06/opinion/costello-provocative-clothes-dont-cause-rape/?cid=ob_articlesidebarall&iref=obinsite

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 1 in 4 rapes take place in the victim’s home. Two in 10 rapes take place at the home of a friend, neighbor or relative. And almost two-thirds of all rapes are committed by someone the victim already knows. Don’t think a short skirt provoked these men to rape.  http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/06/opinion/costello-provocative-clothes-dont-cause-rape/?cid=ob_articlesidebarall&iref=obinsite

My daughter was 22 when she died at her boyfriend’s music studio after someone spiked her drink with GHB. She had gone to the studio alone and after hours by late night invitation of the boyfriend/rapper. She told her roommate she was going to get the boyfriend and return. She lit a candle and left. No one saw her alive again.

Her boyfriend drove my daughter to a hospital dead on arrival. She had been dead several hours before he took her to the hospital. He never called 911 when she fell to the floor after unknowingly ingesting GHB instead he decided to let her sleep it off. He claimed he didn’t know how she came in contact with GHB and he and the band suggested in their statements someone spiked her drink at the dance club before she arrived.

Only problem with their collaborative story is she walked 13 blocks from the club to the boyfriend’s studio, which is physically impossible given the amount of GHB still in her body post-mortum. The boyfriend/band also claim in their statements to police that my daughter had been at the studio approximately 40 to 50 minutes before she collapsed in seizures. We now know depending on stomach contents one can react to GHB in 10 to 15 minutes following ingestion, depending on the stomach content and, presence of alcohol. Her’s stomach was near empty; she’d had two glasses of wine over several hours. It’s clear from these two facts alone there existed reasonable cause for the D.A. to take the case, because the expert’s report challenged the boyfriend/band’s version of the facts. The investigating police officer didn’t believe the boyfriend’s/band’s story because the band manager was known the police said for drug dealing and possibly laundering money. The case went from the police directly to the homicide division.

But, today, my daughter”s case remains a cold case. The homicide detective did little to investigate the case and, in my opinion, was a fan of the rapper/ band. He ignored the GHB expert report who reviewed the records and concluded the GHB had to have been ingested at the studio. This one report written in April 2000 provided cause to prosecute because the boyfriend/band had all testified they were not the source of the drug but the expert, Dr. Debroah Zvosec’s report indicated otherwise. The homicide detective accepted the boyfriend and band’s statements which claimed my daughter came to their studio uninvited and drunk, and, often, showed up at parties uninvited and on drugs. THE DETECTIVE BLAMED THE VICTIM. He immediately made it clear he believed my daughter voluntarily took GHB and he tried to discredit my daughter. Yet, the medical personnel, police, friends of my daughter all testified, otherwise. They boyfriend/band lied according to the people who walked home from the club with my daughter and saw her minutes before she walked the final block alone to the studio. These witnesses were never questioned by the homicide detective. Less than 24 hrs. after the boyfriend/rapper took my daughter’s dead body to a hospital, he left town. When I tracked him down, he confessed, he and the band had been messed up for days on various drugs which he said caused him to make a bad judgment call in not calling 911 when my daughter collapsed and went into a coma. The boyfriend and his band have been free men and were never prosecuted for their crime of causing the death of a WOMAN/GIRL!  I hope to soon complete and post her for my readers, Shadow Dance, a fictionalized version of my daughter’s story.

Our bodies are the garden of our soul. We should not have to defend ourselves against the onslaught of predators who act like friends who care and value our lives but in reality only seek two things: vulnerability and opportunity…then, they strike. Raise your awareness to include your sisters, who may be out alone and vulnerable, please befriend them and invite them to join your table, group or network of friends.  Remember, You are more likely to survive sexual assault if you fight back then if you submit. Please take up a Self-defense class in your neighborhood!

BE ALL YOU CAN BE
Step out into the cool night air. Look at the stars. See how they shine. Know that is is okay for you to shine, too.
Who told you you had to hold back? Who told you your gifts, your talents, your beauty, [your sexuality]–your natural, beautiful, loving, delightful self–was wrong? Who told you not to be all you could be? Maybe, as some suggest, we’ve gotten too comfortable focusing on our flaws, our errors, our dark side. Perhaps its not our dark side we fear. Perhaps, we’re really afraid of our gifts, our brilliance, our light.
Now is a time of light. It’s time for us to shine. We’ve worked hard for ourselves, death with our issues, gone back to the past. We’ve learned our lessons well. The reasons to hold back and hide away are no longer there. Enjoy the fruits of your labors.
Be all you can be, and enjoy being that. Don’t hold back. Use your gifts with joy. Use your talen=ts. Let your light shine for all the world to see. Melody Beattie

{May 18, 2014}   GHB — A threat to society

Fifteen years ago I learned from a stranger’s voice at a hospital emergency room on the west coast where my daughter was attending college, she was dead-on-arrival at their hospital from GHB poisoning. The men, a local hip-hop singer and his band, who brought my daughter to the hospital admitted in sworn statements to the police she had been at their music studio forty to fifty minutes before she fell to the floor convulsing and went into a coma. The men despite attempting to give CPR and quitting, didn’t call 911 or seek medical attention.

What’s always been confusing is the homicide division didn’t immediately react to the red herring in the men’s statements i.e., my daughter was at their studio 40 to 50 minutes before showing any symptoms of distress, which indicates my daughter did in fact ingest the GHB at the music studio, despite the men’s denial they were the source of the GHB or had anything to do with her death. Their statements were flawed with suspicious impossibilities. The boyfriend singer denied he was my daughter’s boyfriend, and denied my daughter’s involvement with him professionally as she had designed the covers for his CD (http://www.musicstack.com/discography/abstract+tribe+unique/mood+pieces/r722941.) Yet, neither the police nor the homicide division of San Francisco never followed up on these issues or others, and they never brought these men in for questioning beyond the initial statements they gave he police called to the hospital. The facts surrounding her death and the GHB poisoning were never made clear to the public (http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Concern-Over-Rise-In-Blue-Nitro-Use-6-in-S-F-2912000.php.)

Those men, they walked away–free men, unaccountable for their predatory acts and it is clear from my daughter’s friends who she had been with all evening prior to her leaving for the music studio to pick up her boyfriend in the predawn hours of Easter Sunday, she was clear and radiant, and fully cognizant. It was clear she never would have voluntarily taken the massive dose of GHB still remaining in her system postmortem even though GHB metabolizes from the blood and tissue very rapidly. Her toxicology report indicated GHB was the only drug in her system although there was a trace of alcohol.

My daughter’s life ended senselessly and her death has left an indelible stain on our hearts. My hope has been to this day to find a retired private detective who will take an interest in wanting to solve my daughter’s cold case and reopen an investigation to look at the evidence with a mind to solve the crime because those who predatorily murdered her with GHB need to answer in a court of law. Particularly since 15 years ago there wasn’t as many facts about GHB as we now know and by the men’s own admission (in their statements), my daughter didn’t show symptoms until 40 to 50 minutes after she arrived at their music studio to pick up her boyfriend, the hip-hop singer, who had called and asked her to come get him. She was never seen alive again. Her drink was spiked with a fatal dose of GHB, and the predators aren’t turning themselves in.

What we now know (http://www.nhtsa.gov/people/injury/research/job185drugs/gamma-hydroxybutyrate.htm), as fact, is GHB reacts in the body within 15 to 20 minutes minutes of ingestion depending on stomach content. And, if you are drinking alcohol it has a synergistic effect (speeding) on the depressing the central nervous system. GHB is made from industrial solvent purchased at the hardware store and can be manufactured in one’s kitchen sink.

BUT, despite all we know about GHB ((http://www.ussc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/amendment-process/public-hearings-and-meetings/20040317-19/Avergun-DOJ.pdf), it’s proliferation (http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/02/27/2-investigators-date-rape-drug-becoming-favorite-for-recreational-use/) has moved from the kitchen sink operations of the 90’s to worldwide clandestine manufacturers (http://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/californians-overdose-leads-arrest-phoenix-and-seizure-1100-gallons-illegal) around the planet, especially China, who manufacture GHB in 55-gallon drums and is marketed over the internet by black market dealers.

GHB IS A THREAT TO SOCIETY and the more awake and conscious and aware we become of predators armed with GHB in our midst the more likely we can destroy the market for this threatening drug. Who do you think is predominately the victim of GHB and date rape drug poisonings? WOMEN. Be a beacon for GHB awareness and watch out for vulnerability in women in your proximity. If you see someone putting something in someone’s drink, speak up…WARN the potential victim. Align with your sisters.

In honor of my daughter, Skylar Lynn, be conscious, stay aware of your drinks…NEVER leave your drink unattended. “Spread the good word in honor of Skylar Ringland, a shining star of our underground family who lost her life recently due to her involuntary ingestion of GHB,” (http://www.metroactive.com/papers/sfmetro/05.10.99/groundscore.html)..

To anyone who seeks to donate to the Skylar Lynn Ringland Foundation and the investigation into her senseless death, please contact Cat Lynn Boyle at catboyl30@gmail.com.

As many of you know, I have been writing a novel, SHADOW DANCE by Cat Lynn BoyleShadow Dance, based on a GHB poisoning in 1999 that took my daughter’s life.

The title of the novel has been edited from Alchemy of A Shadow Dance to “Shadow Dance,” and it will soon be linked here so you may read my story. Shadow Dance has had its first edit but I anticipate more intensive editing before I can submit the story to publishers. I look forward to your comments once I post it here.

Alchemy of A Shadow Dance 12 22 2013 – MASTER Alchemy of A Shadow Dance is a manuscript written in memory of my daughter, Skylar Lynn Ringland, who went to a music studio in San Francisco after hours and was never seen alive again, She was poisoned with the drug GHB. Her case remains a San Francisco cold case. I have created this blog in her honor. Alchemy of a Shadow Dance is written in her memory. Alchemy of A Shadow Dance is fiction but it is based on the events that occurred in 1999. Alchemy of A Shadow Dance is about stories within stories as read from a journal or told from different perspectives. Everything is in a state of change as the story introduces a bright young girl who will die before the end of Part I. Murdered by poison by someone she knew, a predator with GHB. Part II tells about profound loss that transforms a family broken by suffering as they struggle to make sense of the tragedy and strive for justice. Part III, unlike real life, brings the predators to trial and ultimately, justice prevails. Alchemy of A Shadow Dance is a story of change and transformation; of life and death; of love and hate; of despair and grace; of bravery and cowardice; of wholeness and brokenness; of truth and deception; of murder and revenge. Anything can help launch this project. Thank you for your support.
