Women's Awareness Blog

{June 3, 2016}   Katie Koestner

Bringing her story of date rape to the world, Katie Koestner (http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-36434191), kept her story alive. We know it can happen to any girl or woman. It can happen if your female. Thank you Katie Koestler for awareness you have provided by telling your story until people listened. Thank you. I know there are many of you out there that have a story too. Let us hear your voice. Join the conversation.

Please, help keep my daughter, Skylar’s story alive. Its a story about how a young 22 year old girl can innocently or unknowingly open doors and hearts to predators in their midst. I have written a novel, called Sophie’s Shadow. (previously written as SHADOWDANCE by Cat Lynn Boyle as of 2016 03 20by Cat Lynn Boyle as of 2016 03 20) It tells my daughter’s story. It’s about what happened to her one dawn when her boyfriend invited her after hours to his studio. Seven hours laters, she died in his arms after ingesting a drink laced with the date rape drug, GHB. Skylar’s case is a cold case, and, what her case needs is the attention Katie Koestler is able to incite around her experience with date rape. Katie Koestner is the hero, I’m not. If any of you reading this blog have ideas about how to build momentum around Skylar’s story, please reply with your ideas. And, Katie, if you read my blog, I’d really enjoy hearing more of your story. Thank you for following.

As many of you, who have followed my blog in the past, know, I’ve been distracted by the intensive work of editing a novel, Shadow Dance, which is written in memory of my beloved daughter, who died as a result of a GHB poisoning, and, for whom this site is in memoriam. I am so thrilled to inform you that the work of editing is paying off. Shadow Dance has received literary mention, by the William Faulkner Literary Awards for 2015 Best Novel Honorable Mention!

It will not be long before Shadow Dance will be available in bookstores, as well as if you place a request here for a free copy once published in gratitude for following and supporting raising awareness of violence against women.

{January 11, 2015}   Product Recall…

Hello out there…You know, when you think about it, the media in general, the fashion industry, the porn industry, music & entertainment especially rap & ghetto music, even female artist like Lady gaga, Rhianna, etc, movies, stripping & pole dancing, rape and the whole criminal justice system concerning rape, body and facial surgery, black market prostitutes, predators, drugs especially date rape drugs, and alcohol….the list is long…but you get the picture…women in these scenarios are pawns at best at worse are a means to an ends..for

western patriarchal society submits to the whims of men. It creates a culture dominated by the whims of men. When everything clearly caters to the whims of men why change the laws? Why legislate more rights for women? Why not limit or take away women’s rights? Why not enslave women in a system that defeats them?

Why does century old violence against women persist throughout the world? It persist because it is the whims of men. Why are women exploited like commercial products? Because it further dehumanizes women, half of humanity.

Product recall REMINDING YOU raise your conscious awareness. Don’t be enslaved by dehumanizing systems and cultures. You’re the miracle you’re waiting for. Think of those 1.5 million people who took to the streets in Paris this morning to march against oppression by Jihadists. There were each the miracle. Equality to be whoever you are is a human right shared by ALL men and women. Be your own miracle. Own your sexuality without submitting to the whims of men. What’s your take? Weigh in.

{January 11, 2015}   You are more than a body…

If you surf the Internet, watch cable T.V., follow fashion trends, its everywhere…SEX is everywhere…

Music videos, movies, reality shows, beer ads, online porn, prostitutes in video games, sexy doctor shows. Sex is everywhere. And studies show that the more sexual content kids watch and listen to, the earlier they’re likely to have sex themselves. In fact, teens report that their main source of information about sex, dating and sexual health comes from what they see and hear in the media. http://www.greatschools.org/students/media-kids/510-sexual-behavior-teens-learn-from-media.gs

young girls are defining sexuality based on the Kardasians, Beonce, Lady Gaga, Nikki Menage, Miley Cyrus…nothing is off limits…it all comes off…porn has become mainstream…the exploitation of the sacred female body.,,,by women…a woman with a battery charger in her vagina…. Chelsey likes to bare her breast. Lady Gaga’s reveals all…she pulls the rug out on what’s safe…a dress made of red meat…the Kardasians worship the butt…  What is happening here?

Objectification of women flows out of a culture that accepts its children define sexuality largely by the media messaging, and by a culture that coexists with perpetual exploitation of women…from cradle to grave.

How do we protect young girls from the influences of the media and ensure against exploitive brainwashing.defining women by body parts and sexuality.

How do we shift cultural norms and attitudes rooted in ignorance toward women as sexual objects?

You’re more than your body…you’re an infinite field of possibility. Love to hear your voice. Let’s know what you think…or dream…

BE ALL YOU CAN BE
Step out into the cool night air. Look at the stars. See how they shine. Know that is is okay for you to shine, too.
Who told you you had to hold back? Who told you your gifts, your talents, your beauty, [your sexuality]–your natural, beautiful, loving, delightful self–was wrong? Who told you not to be all you could be? Maybe, as some suggest, we’ve gotten too comfortable focusing on our flaws, our errors, our dark side. Perhaps its not our dark side we fear. Perhaps, we’re really afraid of our gifts, our brilliance, our light.
Now is a time of light. It’s time for us to shine. We’ve worked hard for ourselves, death with our issues, gone back to the past. We’ve learned our lessons well. The reasons to hold back and hide away are no longer there. Enjoy the fruits of your labors.
Be all you can be, and enjoy being that. Don’t hold back. Use your gifts with joy. Use your talen=ts. Let your light shine for all the world to see. Melody Beattie

Namaste

let’s not loose site of the real issue…the conscious decision to act predatorily…

I think in a prior post I may have said that only men rape and that may be true BUT THE MAJORITY OF MEN DO NOT RAPE… http://wagingnonviolence.org/feature/rape-rape-culture-problem-patriarchy/

and here’s what RAINN reports about the majority:

Men who do not rape but would be willing to rape if they were sure they would not be punished.
Men who do not rape but will not intervene when another man rapes.
Men who do not rape but buy sex with women who have been, or likely will be, raped in the context of being prostituted.
Men who do not rape but will watch films of women in situations that depict rape or rape-like acts.
Men who do not rape but find the idea of rape sexually arousing.
Men who do not rape but whose sexual arousal depends on feeling dominant and having power over a woman.
Men who do not rape but routinely masturbate to pornography in which women are presented as objectified bodies whose primary, or only, function is to provide sexual pleasure for men.
Those men are not rapists. But is that fact — that the men in these categories are not, in legal terms, guilty of rape — comforting? Are we advancing the cause of ending men’s violence against women by focusing only on the acts legally defined as rape— rape as an act of “forcible penetration” http://wagingnonviolence.org/feature/rape-rape-culture-problem-patriarchy/

— the research establishes that between 10.6 percent and 16.1 percent of American women have been raped. That means somewhere between 12 million and 18 million women in this country today live as rape victim-survivors, if we use a narrow definition of the crime.

THAT FACT IS STAGGERING> My beloved daughter, in whose memory I blog, was the victim of a predatory date rape drug (GHB)poisoning that induced her death within hours. The men who were responsible went free, un-prosecuted! My personal history includes being molested at age 5, 9, and 13, and raped at 16 and at 19 aided by a date rape drug. When I was 5 I didn’t tell anyone until I was almost 30 but even then the truth was ill received. I did not report the rapes. ..A rape culture doesn’t command men to rape, but it does make rape inviting, and it reduces the likelihood rapists will be identified, arrested, prosecuted, convicted and punished. http://wagingnonviolence.org/feature/rape-rape-culture-problem-patriarchy/

Why should we fear talking about the socialization process by which boys and men are trained to see themselves as powerful over women and to see women as sexual objects? THIS IS THE CONVERSATION I KEEP ASKING FOR. I’M NOT AFRAID TO ASK BECAUSE LADIES WE HAVE ONE CHANCE TO CHANGE HOW MEN PERCEIVE WOMEN AND IT BEGINS WHEN THE MAN IS A BABY AND THEN A BOY THAT IS WHEN HE IS LEARNING ABOUT RELATIONS<
HIPS…ABOUT LOVE AND HONOR..I SPEAK FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF MY OWN SON WHO BURIED A SISTER AND HAS BEEN RAISED BY A SINGLE MOTHER…HE LOVES AND HONORS WOMEN…MY SON IS CHIVALROUS…HE IS KIND AND CARING ABOUT WOMEN….SO I KNOW IT'S POSSIBLE. RAISE BOYS WHO LOVE AND HONOR WOMEN.

{July 18, 2014}   Brave Miss World

I saw the above documentary on Netflix and it is amazing. Read how Miss World 1998, uses the trauma of rape to empower her and now, to take that energy into the world empowering other women and asking them to join her voice to speak out and no longer be silent and violence against women. What an amazing woman. Watch and listen to her story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6AXRNgVbgc

Every girl and woman should be able to live safely and free of violence. Violence against women must never be accepted, never excused, never tolerated.

In terms of the U.N.’s perspective on crimes against women, the analysis focusses on the threat to social structures and economic and productivity models: Violence against women and girls is a gross human rights violation that fractures families and communities and hampers development. It has enormous social, economic and productivity costs for individuals, families, communities and societies.
It costs countries billions of dollars every year in extra health care costs and lost productivity.

Worldwide, how can what constitutes rape vary from country to country? Is there any doubt in any woman’s mmd what constitutes rape? No, all women clearly understand what constitutes rape. Apparently though for men rape is a grey area. The is reflected in the fact that the definition of what constitutes rape varies from country to country so there’s no internationally accepted method of comparing on country’s rape statistics with those of other nations. http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/04/world/asia/india-rape-problem-udas/index.html?iid=article_sidebar

India: 14 year old raped by decree of village elder: http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/15/world/asia/india-rape-village-rules/index.html?hpt=hp_t4

In India, “[i]ncidents of rape have gone up by 873% in India in the past 60 years. On average, each day, three Dalit women are raped in some part of our country. The conviction rate for rape cases in 2011 was 25% — although some estimate only one in 10 rapes is reported. The conviction rate for men accused of raping Dalit women is almost nil…” http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/27/opinion/gupta-india-rape-culture/index.html?iid=article_sidebar

A Non-volent response to this war:

Launched in 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign aims to raise public awareness and increase political will and resources for preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world.

The global vision of the UNiTE campaign is a world free from violence against all women and girls.
UNiTE Goals

Adoption and enforcement of national laws to…punish all forms of violence against women and girls, in line with international human rights standards.
Establishment of national and/or local campaigns and the engagement of a diverse range of civil society actors in preventing violence and in supporting women and girls who have been abused. [This is similar to Obama’s recent approach with college campuses]
Systematic efforts to address sexual violence in conflict situations and to protect women and girls from rape as a tactic of war and full implementation of related laws and policies. http://endviolence.un.org/about.shtml

STAY CONNECTED WTH YOUR SISTERS AROUND THE GLOBE- MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Every year, 25 November and the ensuing 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence which follow (ending on 10 December, Human Rights Day) are commemorated around the world, providing individuals and groups a chance to mobilize and call attention to the urgent need to end violence against women and girls. – See more at: http://www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/end-violence-against-women#sthash.mGqMA90D.dpuf
